S1c Raymond Arthur Roby

Raymond Arthur Roby, the only son of George and Elsie Iona Roby, was a seaman first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.

He was born June 30, 1921 in Oliver, Pennsylvania just north of Uniontown about 40 miles south-southeast of Pittsburgh, and graduated from North Union High School in Uniontown. He enlisted on Jan. 10, 1940.

His father, an Army private in World War I, was an electrician and in late 1941 was away from home helping build ships at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. His mother was working in Uniontown, population 21,800, at a downtown department store. The family had four daughters.
